He grew up in Skelleftehamn where his father was music master for the Salvation Army band. Kent became an early principal and had played most of the FA cornet solos at a fairly young age. After elementary school, he studied trumpet at Framnäs Folkhögskola in Piteå. During his studies at the Academy of Music in Stockholm, he was principal in the Vasakåren's music choir and deputy music master. Kent was also a member of Solna Brass, principal and soprano cornet.

After completing his studies, Kent returned to Skelleftehamn and became music master in the music choir. In 1983 he won the audition for the solo trumpet position at the Royal Court Chapel and thus succeeded his teacher Göran Åkestedt. Kent is also a teacher at the Academy of Music in Örebro.

Over the years, Kent has been a guest conductor in e.g. Gothenburg Brassband and Oslo 1, principal conductor at Jelöy Folk College's brass band course, conductor for Solna Brass, etc.

Kent is also often hired as a soloist in brass band contexts and has recently taken up conducting seriously. Since January 2006, Kent Jonsson has been appointed conductor of the Stockholm Brass Band.
