Detroit-based Japanese-American musician, DJ, label co-founder, WDET 101.9FM host, and longtime Ghostly International artist.
Shigeto is Saginaw’s middle name and his grandfather’s name, a tribute to the Japanese branch of Saginaw’s family tree. It also means to grow.
Raised in Detroit/Ann Arbor, Saginaw spent three semesters studying jazz at the New School in NYC and three more in London, where he learned electronic production.
He moved to Brooklyn in the early 2010s when he took up the name Shigeto. Following a stint there, he returned home to Michigan in 2013 and became part of Detroit’s music scene.
He founded Portage Garage Sounds in 2017 with his brother Ben Saginaw and friend Vinnie Massimino.
