American fiddle player, singer and songwriter.
Adelyne Hood, also known as Betsy White, was born in 1897 in South Carolina. She was proficient in playing the violin, piano, and organ. In the early 1920s, Adelyne Hood embarked on a career as a vaudeville performer. With musicians Vernon Dalhart and Carson Robison she was part of the Dalhart-Hood-Robinson trio. In 1929, Adelyne Hood achieved considerable success with the release of the hit song Calamity Jane. She embarked on a tour of Europe's music halls in the 1930s. In 1936, she married Alfred J. Phipps. They settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she continued to make appearances on the radio, notably as Aunt Caroline, with renditions of traditional Negro songs, accompanied with her violin. Adelyne Hood Phipps died unexpectedly on April 11, 1958, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the age of 60.
