Higgins and his wife Opal started out by using portable equipment to record for churches. After working for a while with Top Talent run by Wayne Carson Thompson and Si Simon, the Higginses and other financial backers bought the studio and changed the name to Century Custom Studio. In the late 1960's, the name was changed to American Artists.
