He attended Messick High School and college at the University of Virginia on a DuPont merit scholarship.
He became a professional musician at age 13, playing mostly saxophone, with Ace Cannon, the Playboys, the Tomahawks, Randy and the Radiants, Larry Raspberry and the Highsteppers, Smokehouse, Brenda Lee, Jackie Wilson, Tina Turner, Hank Williams, Jr., Elvin Bishop, the Dynatones, among others.
