US bandleader, washboard player, drummer and founder of dixieland revivalist jazz combo The Red Onion Jazz Band. Thompson formed the outfit in 1952 with trumpeter Bob Hodes and remained at the helm until his death in 2010. In addition to his 58 year long recording and performance career, he was Professor Emeritus of psychology at Hunter College in his native New York.
