Author of The Dance Band Era: The Dancing Decades from Ragtime to Swing, 1910-1950 (1971) and Big Band Jazz (1974) and co-author of Jazz On Record A Critical Guide to the First 50 years 1917-1967 (1968). Editor of Jazz Monthly magazine (later Jazz and Blues) from 1955 to 1972
