American music journalist, writer and radio commentator born in 1948. Since 1986 he has been known as the rock-and-roll historian for NPR's program, Fresh Air. His byline has appeared in such legendary publications as Crawdaddy, Rolling Stone and Creem, as well as the Austin American-Statesman, where he was a music critic from 1979 to 1984. He lives in Austin, Texas and is one of the original founders of Austin's South by Southwest music festival.
