Contributed album liner notes and wrote seven books about jazz. He began his career in journalism at The Philadelphia Inquirer in 1978, was a jazz critic for The Village Voice and a contributing editor to The Atlantic (Monthly) from 1984 to 2010. He was married to Terry Gross.
