XL Design was founded by Tom Watkins and Royston Edwards in 1981. David Smart joined the company as co-partner in 1982. Mark Farrow joined later as a junior designer. XL wound down in 1986, partially due to the demands of Watkins’ other job as band manager. Edwards and Smart went on to form Accident (8)/Accident.
