Swedish conductor in military music. Former head of Hemvärnets 35 orchestras, born in Brännkyrka parish in Stockholm, died 2013, 89 years old.
He joined the Uddevalla and Bohuslän regimental music corps in 1949, where he first became a music conductor. Once in Uddevalla, Birger got involved as leader of various music choirs in the Trestad area and as a music teacher at Margretegärdeskolan.
In the early 1970s, he became the conductor and head of education for the Home Guard's music corps/Göteborg Symphonic Band and he was also for a few years the conductor and musical director of the National Association of Swedish Amateur Orchestras (RSAO).
The regiment's music corps was transformed into the Regional Music Corps in Uddevalla in 1971 and moved to Gustafsberg. Birger Jarl was part of the Regional Music Corps until his retirement in 1983.
The music corps at King Bohuslän's regiment had centuries-old origins and played a strong role in carrying on the musical traditions. The military musicians not only performed military marching music, but also formed the framework of civilian musical life through participation in many different orchestras and contexts.
