Mark Colby (1949-2020) was a saxophonist and educator born in Brooklyn, New York. Raised in a musical family, with his father being a professional drummer who once performed with Benny Goodman, Mark's musical journey began early. He started playing clarinet at the age of eight and later transitioned to the saxophone, solidifying his passion for music. In 1962, his family moved to Miami, Florida, where Mark began his professional career as a musician at the age of 14.

He pursued his musical education at the University of Miami, studying under notable jazz figures such as Jerry Coker and Vince Maggio. During his college years, he had the unique opportunity to collaborate with Gerry Mulligan and record with various renowned artists. After completing his Master's Degree in Jazz Studies, Mark received an invitation from Maynard Ferguson to join his band in New York, leading to a three-year tenure as a featured soloist and musical director. His time with Ferguson resulted in notable recordings and significant contributions to the band's sound.

Subsequently, he became a member of Bob James' band, signing with Columbia Records and embarking on a solo recording career. His albums Serpentine Fire and One Good Turn achieved commercial success. Mark's musical journey also included collaborations with renowned artists like Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr., Charlie Haden, Jaco Pastorius, Doc Severinsen, Frank Sinatra, Ira Sullivan, and Sarah Vaughan.

Throughout his career, Mark Colby's dedication to music, both as a performer and educator, left a lasting impact on the jazz world. He shared his knowledge and insights as an adjunct faculty member at Elmhurst University and as a faculty member at DePaul University for 31 years. His musical legacy endures through his recordings, performances, and contributions to jazz education, particularly during his influential three years with Maynard Ferguson, and six years with the Bob James Band.
