MATHIMIDORI – ARTIST BIO

Sometimes it’s the special experiences that not only echo for a long time but also create new creative worlds. For DJ and producer Mathias Kaden, it was such a magical moment when he stayed in the mountains of the Japanese small town Kawaba during his first Japan tour in 2008. At the renowned Labyrinth Festival, which he attended at the time, he was astonished to notice that throughout most of the day, only dub and electronic music played, carried by a meditative, contemplative atmosphere. These quiet sounds, this minimalist power that permeated the Japanese music scene, deeply inspired Kaden. In that moment, the idea was born that would lead him to one of his most famous projects: “Kawaba.”
The track he created together with Japanese singer Tomomi Ukumori brought to life the deeply resonant, dub-inspired essence of these experiences. It found its place on Kaden's debut album Studio 10 (Vakant) and was later remixed by none other than DJ Koze. However, for Mathias Kaden, this was not a one-off excursion, but the beginning of an artistic journey that would lead him to his side project Mathimidori – a musical world dedicated entirely to the reduced, minimalist form of dub. Without the drama of sprawling breaks and self-centered crescendos, Mathimidori unfolds a soundscape characterized by warm, dubby reggae sounds and poetic Japanese spoken word passages. The music opens a window to a world of calm and balance, revealing a completely new side of Mathias Kaden.
