During their initial run from 1986 to 2007, the band's core lineup featured Mark Stuart on vocals and Will McGinnis on bass, with guitarists Barry Blair (1986-1996), Bob Herdman (1991-2001), and Tyler Burkum (1997-2007), and drummer Ben Cissell on drums from 1995 to 2007. During this time, the band won two Grammys and five Dove Awards and sold hundreds of thousands of records. In 2006, Audio Adrenaline announced plans for a final tour and retirement due to Stuart's ongoing struggles with vocal cord damage from spasmodic dysphonia.
In 2012 the band reformed (with Stuart's blessing), featuring McGuinness on bass and an otherwise all-new lineup with Kevin Max of
dc Talk on vocals, Dave Ghazarian of
Superchic[k] on guitar, Jason Walker on keyboards, Jared Byers of
Bleach on drums. This lineup recorded
Kings & Queens, released in 2013.
Following further lineup changes, 2015's
The Sound of the Saints was recorded by an entirely new band featuring no members from either the original 1986-2007 era or the
Kings & Queens era. The group disbanded again in 2017.
