Bluegrass dobro player. He joined the The Kentucky Colonels in 1959. He met Steve Hatfield in 1965 in church. They teamed up together and started playing and writing Christian and gospel music, under his birth name: LeRoy McNees. In the meantime he kept on playing dobro in different groups.
