Hancock's professional career began after the second world war, eventually leading to the BBC radio series Hancock's Half Hour (1954-59), which transferred to BBC television and continued until 1961. He made several film appearances, including two star vehicles, The Rebel (US: Call Me Genius, 1961), and The Punch and Judy Man (1963). By the mid-1960s, his career and health had declined owing to alcoholism and, in 1968, he took his own life (overdose) while staying in Bellevue Hill, Sydney.
