American musician and guitarist based in New York & London who has made significant contributions to the world of music over the past several decades. Born in Dayton, Ohio (USA) on 1 September 1949 as
Bernard Alexander, he began playing music at a young age and quickly developed a deep passion for the guitar. In addition to his work as a guitarist, McDonald is also a talented singer, songwriter, and producer. His eclectic musical style incorporates elements of funk, reggae, rock and blues, among other genres.
Over the years he has worked very closely with bassist
Doug Wimbish and drummer
Keith LeBlanc, whom he met in the 1970s. First in
Wood, Brass & Steel, from 1979 onwards in the
Sugarhill Gang Band (the house band for Sugarhill Records), later still on various [l2409] projects such as
Fats Comet and
Tackhead.
