American bassist Hansford began his career in the clubs of New York City. He joined Gong in 1978, now a jazz-roc group led by Pierre Moelen, just before they became Pierre Moerlen's Gong.  International touring soon secured Hansford a place among the world's leading bass players and work with Mike Oldfield, Allan Holdsworth, John Martyn, Bireli Lagrene, La Monte Young, David Fuze Fiuczynski, Gary Husband, David Torn, Jon Catler etc.
He is a founding member of the bands Gongzilla,  Steel Blue, and his latest project is a jazz power trio called HRIII, which gave birth in parallel to Gong Expresso.

Hansford has worked closely with bass guitar manufacturers on the development of the first 'Just Intonation bass'.
