British short-lived late 60s blues/R'n'B band led by
Art Wood.
In the spring of 1969, former
The Artwoods frontman Art Wood started rehearsing with a new band that included younger brother Ronnie (about to leave
Jeff Beck Group), Ron's former
The Birds/
The Creation colleague Kim Gardner, and former
Small Faces pair Ian McLagan and Kenny Jones. Needing a name in order to get some gigs, Art Wood plumped for
Quiet Melon. The group played several gigs in May, including a show at Surrey University that saw them augmented by Long John Baldry and Ron's colleague in
Jeff Beck Group, Rod Stewart. When Art Wood was notified by the Fontana label that he was still under contract and owed them some music, a
Quiet Melon line-up (including Rod Stewart, but apparently with Ronnie Lane replacing Kim Gardner on bass) went into Philips Studios. But the Fontana rejected the recordings as not up to snuff. At this point the rest of the band stayed together as
Faces, while Art Wood abandoned the music business to return to his original occupation as a graphic designer. In 1995 these tapes were issued as
Art Wood's Quiet Melon (CD single) &
Art Wood's Quiet Melon (12 EP).
