American guitarist based in Texas. Mayes began playing guitar in Iowa and Texas in the 1960s.
After a brief stint at the University of North Texas, Mayes moved to California with the band Southpaw. He returned to Texas around 1975/76 and formed the band Big D Stuff. He worked with Black Oak Arkansas as a crew member and guitarist in 1982 and 1987. During the 1990s, he played with the bands Alamo and The Voodoo Kings. He went on to play with Buddy Whittington, The Powerhouse and Point Blank.
