Cathy Claret is an french artist, composer, musician and producer. She composes all her songs and her music is a blend of her distinctive voice (reminiscent of
Astrud Gilberto,
Jane Birkin,
Jeanette or
Françoise Hardy) with gypsy pop, bossa nova and french chanson. All with a naive and original touch. She has been a pioneer in fusing pop with the spanish flamenco art of romani musicians creating her own personal fussion.
On her albums she has collaborated with spanish major artists such a
Pata Negra,
Aurora Losada,
Sorderita,
Soleá Morente or
Rossy De Palma and other artists from around the world such as Pascal Comelade, Henrik Takkenberg, Nouvelle Vague, Finley Quaye, Ben Rogan and Hook Herrera. Her song Bolloré was covered by Raimundo Amador and B.B. King under the name Bolleré. Another of his songs, Porqué, Porqué? was also adapted into Japanese by Yukako Hayase.
She has released a dozen albums around the world and her last two were released in Japan, where they were a success (Claret is a key figure in the Shibuya-Kei sound) . She is currently recording her next album.
Cathy Claret is also an activist for Roma rights and she is the creative founder of the Flamenco Pop Museum, a pioneering project that revives the musical legacy of romaní artists who fused flamenco and pop in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and beyond (including modern romaní artists of urban music)
