Previous to 1980, he was the drummer for a punk band called The Lubricunts. When they split up in 1980, he and the bass player, D.D. Verni, formed the thrash metal band Overkill. He left Overkill in 1987. His stage name, Rat Skates, is a tribute to The Damned drummer Rat Scabies.
