American brother and sister vocal duo, popular in the 1960s and 1970s, comprising
Nino Tempo (born
Antonino LoTempio) and
April Stevens (born Carol Vincinette LoTempio).
Formed early 1960s after auditioning for Ahmet Ertegun, who signed the duo to Atlantic’s sublabel Atco.
They charted in the U.S. as a duo 17 times, Deep Purple hitting #1 in 1963 (for which they won a Grammy Award in 1963 for best rock & roll recording), Whispering rising to #11 (#4 adult contemporary), and Stardust, which hit #32 in 1964 (#10 adult contemporary). They also charted 3 times as a songwriting duo, hitting #41 in the U.K. with A Woman’s Story by
Marc Almond in 1986 (Phil Spector co-writing with them).
