Milton Ager taught himself to play the piano, after spending time as an accompanist to silent movies, he moved to New York to write music. In 1922 he formed his own publishing house called Ager, Yellen and Bornstein, in partnership with his frequent musical collaborator, lyricist Jack Yellen. In 1930 Ager moved to Hollywood under a studio contract where he contributed to numerous film scores. In 1922, Ager co-founded the publishing company of [l848127] - ([l982074]) - ([l1815768]) with composer Jack Yellen and professional manager Ben Bornstein.
Seventy two of Ager’s songs have made it to the U.S. & U.K. charts between 1909 and 2010, led by #1 songs I Wonder What’s Become of Sally? by Al Jolson in 1924, Ain’t She Sweet? by Ben Bernie & His Orchestra in 1927, and Forgive Me by Gene Austin, also in 1927. In all, he’s had 35 songs in the top 10 in the U.S.
He was inducted into Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972.
