In the early 1960s, Barry Jenkins joined the British R&B group The Nashville Teens, replacing Roger Groome as their drummer. The band found success in 1964 with the hit song Tobacco Road, with Jenkins also playing on other tracks like Google Eye and Find My Way Back Home. This success laid the foundation for his future in music. In 1966, Jenkins joined The Animals after original drummer John Steel left the band. He became a key part of The Animals' new sound, contributing to albums like Animalization and Animalism, with hits like Don't Bring Me Down and See See Rider. His time in The Animals also marked a shift towards a more psychedelic rock style under the leadership of lead singer Eric Burdon.Following the breakup of The Animals in late 1968, Jenkins continued his music career by joining other bands, including Heavy Jelly and B.B. Blunder. He also played with former bandmates on various projects in the 1970s and 80s. In 1992, Jenkins rejoined a version of The Animals for a special concert in Moscow, celebrating the first rock performance in Red Square. Outside of performing, Barry Jenkins spent many years running Lukes Guitars, a music shop in Ramsgate, England, where he shared his love for instruments with others. Jenkins passed away on January 27, 2024, at the age of 79.
