Williams released some of his earliest songs on Coral under the name Slim Williams. On Imperial, he used the alias Ed Lawton. For song credits, he variously used J. C. Williams and his real name.

Several songs Williams wrote became hits, including Fraulein, Geisha Girl, Color Of The Blues (with George Jones), I’ll Always Be Your Fraulein, and Shame On Me.
