British cellist and arts administrator. Born 7 March 1946, in Bangalore, Karnataka, India.
He played in the
National Youth Orchestra Of Great Britain. He studied at the [l527847]. After his studies, he became a member of the
New Philharmonia Orchestra. He joined the
London Symphony Orchestra in 1970 and was elected to the Board of Directors of the self-governing orchestra in 1976, also serving as Finance Director. In 1985 he was asked by the Board to become Managing Director of the LSO, a position he held until 2005, when he left for Carnegie Hall to become Executive and Arts Director (in July 2005).
He was appointed a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1999.
