As a musician, he has toured and recorded with kd lang, Dwight Yoakam, Sheryl Crow, Beck, Lucinda Williams, The Dixie Chicks, The Jayhawks, and Jonathan Wilson among many others, on instruments including pedal and lap steel guitar, electric, baritone and acoustic guitar, keyboards, mandolin and bass guitar.
