He began his career in 1970, when he and his friend
Ricky Skaggs joined
Ralph Stanley's band
The Clinch Mountain Boys. That same year, Keith and Ricky recorded a duet album. In 1973, he worked with
Jimmy Gaudreau in a short-lived band called The Country Store. In 1975, he returned to Ralph Stanley's Clinch Mountain Boys as lead singer and guitarist. In 1981, he worked with
J.D. Crowe & The New South. He embarked on a solo career in 1985 and hit the charts with his RCA single, “Miami, My Amy” in 1986. He died on May 9, 1989 of alcohol poisoning.
