Short-lived Brazilian quartet formed in 1967. Percussionist Airto Moreira, guitarist Heraldo do Monte and bassist Theo de Barros were known as Trio Novo. Hermeto Pascoal joined them and the group changed its name to Quarteto Novo. They were the first band to play a sound associated with Northeastern Brazil, based on baião and mixed with jazz improvisations. Despite recording just one eponomous album the group have had a significant influence on Brazilian music.
