Notes for the 2013 version:
When Blue Note founder Alfred Lion came to our One Night With Blue Note concert at Town Hall in February 1985, one of the first things he said to me was, Where is Andrew Hill? Alfred felt that Andrew was his last great discovery in jazz and Bruce Lundvall and I could not have agreed more. So we brought Andrew to the first Mt. Fuji Blue Note Festival in 1986 and eventually signed him to the new Blue Note two years later. Eternal Spirit was the first album under the new arrangement. Of course, Bobby Hutcherson, Rufus Reid and Ben Riley were old friends and comrades familiar with Andrew's musical world. The inclusion of Greg Osby was the inspired suggestion of New York Times jazz critic Peter Watrous. And as you can hear Osby and Hill clicked immediately and enjoyed a wonderful professional relationship for the rest of Andrew's life. – Michael Cuscuna
