Collection of Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester, R. T. Miller Fund, 1949. = = = This sculpture came from the Romanesque church of St. Martin de Candes at Indre-et-Loire, in Western France. Its subject is the Biblical story of Doubting Thomas, who refused to believe in the Resurrection until he was convinced by touching the wound in Christ's side. Christ in this version is wearing the Byzantine nimbus, or halo. The figure of Thomas, whose head has been lost, is kneeling at the left. St. Peter at the right can be identified by his symbol, the key. (jacket, rear)
