In Our Own Hands
These songs were written over the period of a year from December 1983.
They represent a selection/development of our writing from preceding our signing to London Records up to the present time.
The songs were written both for ourselves and the people we live with; they reflect our lives and our understanding of our situation.
It is easy enough to find romance and excitement in applauding and offering slogans on the struggles of the working class, but behind the thin illusion of political relevance there seems little purpose in offering rhetoric in place of the questions and answers that can lead to an understanding of these conflicts and what we need to win.
We lead from the front not behind.
For any contribution to be valuable in a class context, it must first and foremost Question and challenge the ideas and preconceptions that now dominate the minds of our class, preventing them from seeing themselves as a clearly separate section of society and therefore defending their interests consistently as a whole.
It must lead to the developing of an identity.
Not the industry first but the class first.
Not the country first but our class first.
The message is simple: There has never been a better time to challenge the ideas and conceptions that have held us as surely as any chains. In this challenge we can find a culture and identity; a destiny and self respect.
