Willie's Lady comes from a collection of texts called Child Ballads. Scottish folksinger Ray Fisher took the text from the 6th Child Ballad and set it to the tune of a Cape Breton drinking song, Son Ar Chistr, or The Song of Cider. She taught it to the legendary balladeer Martin Carthy, who then recorded and released a version on his album 'Crown of Horn' in 1976. In 2013, Anais Mitchell released a version of her own with updated language that was easier for modern ears to follow. My arrangement picks and chooses elements from both of these versions and then mixes them with a hint of a bluegrass twist.
