CD1 - Leftovers ℗ 2011 Copyright in this Compilation owned by Petbrook Limited on exclusive licence to Creature Music Limited. © 2011 Creature Music Limited. Tracks 2 to 4, 7, 11, 14 & 16 previously unreleased. The cover photo was made from multiple observation of Tassili n'Ajjer National Park by the Landsat 7 satellite, using a combination of ultrared, near-ultrared and visible light to better distinguish between the park's various rock types. Sands appears in shades of yellow and tan. Granite rocks appear brick red. Blue areas are likely salts. Over the course of Earth's history, alternating wet and dry climates have shaped these rocks in multiple ways. Deep ravines are cut into cliff faces along the plateau's northern margin. The ravines are the remnants of ancient rivers that once flowed off the plateau into nearby lakes. Where those lakes once rippled, winds now sculpt the dunes of giant sand seas. In drier period, winds eroded the sandstones of the plateau into stone forests and natural arches. Not surprisingly, the park's name means plateau of chasms. Photo and information courtesy of NASA.
CD2 - Manfred Mann's Earth Band ℗ 1971 Copyright in this Original Sound Recording owned by Petbrook Limited on exclusive licence to Creature Music Limited. © 1971 Creature Music Limited. Recorded at Maximum Sound Studios, London. Original UK release date: 18 February 1972. The Earth Band's first album was in fact their second,. What was to be their debut, Stepping Sideways, was cancelled as the musical direction of the band was altering and it was no longer felt to be representative.
CD3 - Glorified Magnified ℗ 1972 Copyright in this Original Sound Recording owned by Petbrook Limited on exclusive licence to Creature Music Limited. © 1972 Creature Music Limited. Recorded at Maximum Sound Studios, London. Original UK release date: 29 September 1972. One Way Glass had appeared previously in a different form on Manfred Mann Chapter Three Volume 1 in 1969, which was sampled by The Prodigy for their Invaders Must Die album track Stand Up.
CD4 - Messin' ℗ 1973 Copyright in this Original Sound Recording owned by Petbrook Limited on exclusive licence to Creature Music Limited. © 1973 Creature Music Limited. Recorded at Maximum Sound Studios, London. Original UK release date: 15 June 1973. When released in the US, Messin' was re-titled Get Your Rocks Off complete with new artwork and the track Pretty Good replacing Black And Blue, seemingly because the latter being about slavery was deemed unsuitable for the US market at that time.
CD5 - Solar Fire' ℗ 1973 Copyright in this Original Sound Recording owned by Petbrook Limited on exclusive licence to Creature Music Limited. © 1973 Creature Music Limited. Recorded at The Workhouse, London. Original UK release date: 30 November 1973. Father Of Day, Father Of Night is a Bob Dylan track taken from his New Morning album, on which it runs for only a brief one and a half minute. The Earth Band's version extends to nearly ten.
CD6 - The Good Earth' ℗ 1974 Copyright in this Original Sound Recording owned by Petbrook Limited on exclusive licence to Creature Music Limited. © 1974 Creature Music Limited. Recorded at The Workhouse, London. Original UK release date: 11 October 1974. 480,000 one square foot section make up the plot of land which is in Llanerchyrfa in the Parish of Llanfihangel-Abergwesyn in the Brecon Beacons, Wales. The map reference for the land is 52 deg 11' 06.39N; 3 deg 41' 54.59 W.
CD7 - Nightingales & Bombers' ℗ 1975 Copyright in this Original Sound Recording owned by Petbrook Limited on exclusive licence to Creature Music Limited. © 1975 Creature Music Limited. Recorded at The Workhouse, London. Original UK release date: 22 August 1975. The title of the album was inspired by a recording made on the night of 19 May 1942, when BBC engineers visited a wood in Surrey to record nightingales singing. The microphones also picked up the approach of a Bomber Command force heading for Mannheim, a raid by 197 aircrafts including Wellingtons, Stirlings, Halifaxes, Hampdens, Lancasters and Manchesters.
CD8 - The Roaring Silence' ℗ 1976 Copyright in this Original Sound Recording owned by Petbrook Limited on exclusive licence to Creature Music Limited. © 1976 Creature Music Limited. Recorded at The Workhouse, London, except 8-3 recorded live with studio overdubs. Original UK release date: 27 August 1976. The Roaring Silence was re-released in US with a blue cover to incorporate a new single: Spirits In The Night to follow up on the success on the number one US hit Blinded By The Light. The moved was not well received by fans and garnered much comment from the music press.
CD9 - Watch' ℗ 1978 Copyright in this Original Sound Recording owned by Petbrook Limited on exclusive licence to Creature Music Limited. © 1978 Creature Music Limited. Recorded at The Workhouse, London, except 9-5 recorded live with studio overdubs. Original UK release date: 24 February 1978. The Watch cover art by Michael Sanz was executed as oil paintings on two separate 60x60 cm canvases, one for the front cover, the other for the back. The inspiration for the Watch cover motif was suggested by Manfred's Swedish tour manager Thomas Johansson, who suggested the man-on-the-runway motif. The idea was lifted directly from a Swedish ad at the airport, Johansson had showed it to the band when arriving in Stockholm.
CD10 - Angel Station' ℗ 1979 Copyright in this Original Sound Recording owned by Petbrook Limited on exclusive licence to Creature Music Limited. © 1979 Creature Music Limited. Recorded at Dunowen House, County Cork & The Workhouse, London. Original UK release date: 9 March 1979. Originally titled Choice, one of the original concepts for the album cover was intended to feature a graph pattern that would permit the record owner to colour it in one way or another (thus the Choice album title). Changed to Angel Station and with new artwork, the album caused some controversy in the US, the naked woman on the cover was felt to be too explicit and her hair was grown to cover her breasts.
CD11 - Chance' ℗ 1980 Copyright in this Original Sound Recording owned by Petbrook Limited on exclusive licence to Creature Music Limited. © 1980 Creature Music Limited. Recorded at The Workhouse, London & Casa Das Flores, Portugal. Original UK release date: 10 October 1980. Stranded had been recorded previously by the Earth Band for Watch, but was discarded. The song was effectively re-written for its inclusion on Chance and includes excerpts from the BBC Radio Shipping Forecast.
CD12 - Somewhere In Afrika ℗ 1982 Copyright in this Original Sound Recording owned by Petbrook Limited on exclusive licence to Creature Music Limited. © 1982 Creature Music Limited. Recorded at The Workhouse and Underhill Studios, London & Mastersounds, Sweden. Original UK release date: 18 February 1982. The spelling of Africa with a K is because this is the German spelling for the country, a nod for the huge support the band have received from the country throughout their career.
CD13 - Live In Budapest ℗ 1984 Copyright in this Original Sound Recording owned by Petbrook Limited on exclusive licence to Creature Music Limited. © 1984 Creature Music Limited. Recorded at Budapest Sporthalle, April 6/7, 1983. Original UK release date: 17 February 1984. As part of the Somewhere In Afrika tour, the band played three nights in Budapest to some 50,000 and the dates on the 6th and 7th April were recorded to provide material for what was to be the band's first live album. In fact much of Live In Budapest was recorded later at a gig at The Dominion Theatre in London on April 13th.
CD14 - Criminal Tango ℗ 1986 Copyright in this Original Sound Recording owned by Petbrook Limited on exclusive licence to Creature Music Limited. © 1986 Creature Music Limited. Original UK release date: 13 June 1986. Recorded at The Workhouse, London. Criminal Tango is the Earth Band's most American sounding album, perfectly suited for AOR radio. Ironic then that it was not released in the US! On this release, by mistake, both Durban Betancourt-Laverde and John Giblin are credited as playing drums on the album; in fact both of them were playing bass guitar.
CD15 - Masque ℗ 1987 Copyright in this Original Sound Recording owned by Petbrook Limited on exclusive licence to Creature Music Limited. © 1987 Creature Music Limited. Original UK release date: 16 October 1987. Recorded at The Workhouse, London. The final release of the album was changed at the last minute, with three new songs added. This was evident on the LP release at the time, with the new track listing being paste over with a sticker to reflect the new contents.
CD16 - Plains Music ℗ 1991 Copyright in this Original Sound Recording owned by Petbrook Limited on exclusive licence to Creature Music Limited. © 1991 Creature Music Limited. Original UK release date: 1 August 1992. Recorded at The Workhouse, London & RPM Studios, South Africa. Plains Music was inspired by The Indians Book by Natalie Curtis, a song book of native American tribal chants originally published in 1907. Manfred used the melodies from this to develop his material for the album. Due to a printing error, Salmon Fishing is not listed on the back of the poster on the tracklisting of the album.
CD17 - Soft Vengeance ℗ 1996 Copyright in this Original Sound Recording owned by Petbrook Limited on exclusive licence to Creature Music Limited. © 1996 Creature Music Limited. Original UK release date: 3 June 1996. Recorded at The Workhouse, London. Soft Vengeance was originally recorded with Noel Mc Calla and Mick Rogers on vocals, it was only quite late into the recording of the album that Chris Thompson was included, replacing Noel on a number of vocals.
CD18 & 19 - Mann Alive ℗ 1998 Copyright in this Original Sound Recording owned by Petbrook Limited on exclusive licence to Creature Music Limited. © 1998 Creature Music Limited. Original UK release date: 8 June 1998. Recorded at various venues on the Soft Vengeance tour, except 19-8 & 19-9, which are taken from the album Plains Music. Over the 40 years the band have been together, the Earth Band will have played a remarkable 1465 gigs by the end of 2011 (playing 50-60 gigs a year in recent years). That's 4 years worth of gigs and an estimated 3 months as a continuous concert - enough to keep anyone happy.
CD20 - 2006 ℗ 2004 Copyright in this Original Sound Recording owned by Petbrook Limited on exclusive licence to Creature Music Limited. © 2004 Creature Music Limited. Original UK release date: 25 October 2004. Recorded at the Waterworks, London. Demons And Dragons is taken from two separate songs. Dragons was heard by Manfred on a Jimmy Nail TV series (it's from his Crocodile Shoes album), which was once also part of 2006's instrumental interlude, Marche Slave. The other part comes from the classic Super Fury Animals' song of the same name.
CD21 - Live In Ersingen 2011 ℗ 2011 Copyright in this Original Sound Recording owned by Petbrook Limited on exclusive licence to Creature Music Limited. © 2011 Creature Music Limited. Recorded live in Ersingen, Germany, July 22 2011. Mixed by Ian Tompson at Humber Studios, London, except 21-3 & 21-4 mixed directly by John Halke. Live In Ersingen is the first official Earth Band release with Robert Hart as lead vocalist, replacing Peter Cox in March 2011. Performing since the early 1980's, Robert recorded two solo albums before Bad Company founder Mick Ralphs and Simon Kirke asked him to replace Brian Howe in 1992 and, between 1992 and 2001, performed at great venues such as Madison Square Garden and The Superbowl to crowd up to 100,000 people, during seven world tours. Afterwards saw Robert performing with The Jones Gang and X-Bad Company before singing on as the latest member of the Earth Band.
