Ask a handful of music fans what their favourite Irish songs are, and you're bound to get a few totally different lists. What you have here are 40 tunes, from no less than SIX decades. Maybe some of your favourites are in there?

From Van Morrison, who's celebrating his 50th year as an artist this year, through to young guns, The Strypes, who coincidentally play the same type of adrenaline fuelled garage rock as Van's first big act, Them, we take a journey though [sic] time, and a good time it was too.

The years in between are represented by many wonderful artists, as disparate as the storytelling Gilbert O'Sullivan to the anarchic Sultans of Ping F.C. [sic] the techno of The Japanese Popstars to the baroque pop of The Divine Comedy, the subversive sounds of Fatima Mansions, to the genius powerpop of Pugwash.

The Irish music scene has always been a rich tapestry, and that tapestry is far from finished. The future looks bright.
