This release of the “Bitches and Brew” split was sent for distribution and recalled within days after both bands agreed that the packaging design and title misrepresented the music and band members, while the title was deeply hurtful in its appropriation of a song about rampant lynching in the American South and the grief, fear, and rage produced by such domestic terrorism, often supported by local and state authorities. In discussions between Tribe 8 and Blatz after Tribe 8 got back from their European tour with MDC, Blatz and Tribe 8 reached an agreement to remove this record from distribution entirely, forever. This decision came after two intensive discussion sessions, where members of Blatz who’d designed and/or okayed the packaging and title learned about cultural appropriation while also learning about the particular suffering simultaneously referenced and elided in the title. A main concern addressed during the talks was the unwanted continued exposure of insensitive and ignorant misrepresentations that racially targeted punks (in this case and especially Black and Black transgender punks) might encounter while just searching out good music. There’s absolutely no need to cause more harm via unnecessary exposure to an aesthetics of disrespect stemming from White ignorance here. I respectfully ask that this record, which was meant to disappear as a way to show solidarity with and respect for targeted communities with no representation in either band. Please remove this version of the title, cover, and insert for the record distributed as Bitches and Brew from the Blatz and Tribe 8 discography. There’s not a ton of money in it, and there’s a bit of suffering (at the very least, my own) that could be reduced by the removal of this version of packaging from the Blatz discography. (I’m Anna Joy, a former singer and lyricist in Blatz.) I hope you will respond respectfully here as we all find ways to voice and hear concerns without involving people outside our communities, most especially the law. — Anna Joy
