Fado was influenced during this period by many rural workers who had emigrated from the countryside in order to escape from poverty and who were in hope of a better life in Portugal's major cities. This led to serve over-population at these cities. Their disappointment at not being able to escape from poverty, and at still being at the bottom of social ladder of this once so mighty and affluent naval power, was expressed in these melancholic songs. Fado is the music of the Fadistas, who are wholly dressed in black robes. The musicians use the typical instruments like the viola, Portuguese accoustic guitar and a bass guitar of similar type, usually being complemented by the use of accordion and violin.
