Joshua stares at the last few mouthfuls of the bottom of gin he’s about to drink. “I can’t believe there’s not a job for me out there!” It’s been over a year since he’d been fired from his upper management position he was hired for right out of Northwestern. Not too much is left of the good life he led for over 7 years. Even Sherise left him after the time he lost his temper with her 3 months ago. The gin finally had to come up. When Joshua returned from the bathroom, the TV was blaring the Star Spangled Banner with the flag vigorously waving. He felt pain as he kicked the fuckin’ screen in, but at the same time he felt relief. The rain hadn’t let up, but he really needed to walk outside. The neon sign of his favorite little greasy spoon, The Americana, blinked and sparked, Americana. He closed his eyes but the light still burned the letters in the darkness. Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie, amber waves of grain, purple mountains majesty, land of opportunity. Racism, Pollution, Politics, Sexism, Violence, Economics, Ignorance. What’s left of the American pie-dream now, he thought. All that’s left is…
