Despite the references Original 1958 Recordings (front cover) and Recorded January 1958 (back cover), both albums were originally released a year earlier in 1957.

This album compiles tracks from two previously released reel-to-reels on Omegatape: The Art Of Pepper and The Art Of Pepper Vol. II. The liner notes state that some tracks were unreleased, but they were released in 1957 and mostly appear on the Volume 2 disc.
