Recordings were made of radio broadcasts aired during Duke Ellington's 4-week residency at the Panther Room of the Hotel Sherman in Chicago, IL. Since the Panther Room was wired for radio remotes, the Ellington Orchestra made two 30-minute broadcasts most nights on a local station and nationally on the NBC Red and Blue networks.

This release and its companion disc (Duke Ellington And His Orchestra Live from The Hotel Sherman, Chicago Volume 2) offer a small sample of the music performed:

Tracks A1 and A2: September 6, 1940
Tracks A3 and A4: September ?, 1940
Tracks A5 to A9: September 10, 1940
Tracks B1 to B6: September 11, 1940
Tracks B7 to B11: September 12, 1940

Note that the assignment of recordings to specific dates during Ellington's long residency at the Hotel Sherman is open to debate. The above lists the information shown on this release.
