If you don't, you should know that Phil juggles a job as a milkman, farm hand, cow mucker-outer, ox and plough operator and he also mows the family estate with a flymo. But it's when Mum and Dad have thrown their Ovaltine on the fire and gone to bed, that young Philip sneaks down the lane and zooms off to his real passion as a Disc Jockey.
Mison in the mix behaves like a stoned camel wandering the desert searching out sublime, lush oasis tunes. Believing fully in warming up to the mix, the soothing Nights Over Manus by Bouzoo Bajou introduces the set. Imagine a Latin trip to the seaside in a clapped out Beetle with Joyce sitting on your knee singing sweet lullabies and Cal Tjader in the back playing percussion. You're hooked.
Jersey Street's Cry Me A River heads back into town amid bustling street percussion. Look left and Jose Padilla's strumming a true Balearic guitar line on the terrace with a double bass line to envy. and it hasn't even been released yet.
The guitar tags along for New Phunk Theory's hard to find La Nebula Del Verano, a gentle 4/4 doggy paddle round the pool slapping the bongoes as you float. Effortless mixing brings in Native Elements Brazil Minus Six, a dirty Body And Soul percussion ride with beautiful flute and pianos caressing your inside leg. Carefree as a lost lilo blowing across the waves.
The flutes and bongos are out again for Frankie Valentine and his Pescara Blues taking the pace up but keeping it soulful. A real glass bottomed boat of a tune which trickles, into the Japanese space house of Yuzo's Conga Mix of Drifting by Mato from Francois Kevorkian's Wave label. Lie down, watching the jet streams dissolve overhead and have your feet tickled by the breeze. Check that panpipe.
Breaking down, Mr Herman is next up with the Brazilian groove Caxixi. Pure samba magic and one for the pedalo massive Guidance act A:xus and Naomi turn in one of the finest evocative covers ever with their version of Callin' You from the film Baghdad Cafe. Heat haze vocals, shimmering synths, rattlesnake cymbals and a real refresher leading into the endless groove of David Alvarado's brand new swirling jazzy smoocher on Peacefrog. Dropping downtempo The Trainer Shuffle by Blue States is John Barry meets Fila Brazilia and highlights Phils speciality, the sublime up downbeat. Settling back in his deckchair Phil dons his knotted hankie and coming up to sunset he fades in Nightmares On Wax Les Nuits as the sun dips under the horizon. A long, slow orchestral orgasm and all time Balearic classic. It's left to Earth, Wind And Fire to supply the surprise with Departure a rare 7 inch b-side showing how these boys pre-empted Balearia when Phil was but a sperm. Horns, vibes and the sun goes down on another classic set. We're left wanting more but there are cows to milk back home, Go on Mison. - Rob Da Bank
