REVIEW (NecrogenesiS)

Not so long ago — after a staggering seventeen-year hiatus(!) — the single “Young & Beautiful” appeared, which prompted us to briefly introduce this pioneering Czech band.

It’s likely that not many people in our country are familiar with the band M.A.C. OF MAD, though they are anything but new. Their story actually began back in 1987 with Střední Evropa, one of the very first Czech industrial bands. In the mid-1990s, the Prague-based group changed both their name and their style. In this new incarnation, they released several smaller records and two full albums. Yet now, seventeen years (!) and several lineup changes later, it seems they’ve once again found the maximum allowable concentration of madness (if we trust the information found, their name’s acronym stands for just that). This year, they’re back with a new album, previewed by the track “Young and Beautiful.” The band’s new music video, which goes beyond a typical showcase and incorporates a narrative, features a crushing track spiced up with heavily distorted guitar riffs, machine-driven drums, and often twisted synth textures. Despite the abrasive elements, the song’s structure is surprisingly clear—and what truly catches you off guard is that, breaking all expectations, the raw vocals burst forth from a female frontwoman. The last time we saw something like this in the industrial–synth metal sphere from a neighboring country was probably Crna Barbi.

The single was quickly followed by the full eight-track M.A.C. OF MAD album. You couldn’t say that Keep Music Evil demands much of your time — in fact, in our fast-paced world, it fits perfectly: just thirty minutes long. But what an onslaught they pack into that half hour!

After a few seconds of noisy buildup, “Autodafe” kicks things off, and by the time “Nothing to Hide” rolls around, it’s clear the abrasion is only going to intensify. “Signal” briefly leads you to believe the chaos is about to simmer down, which makes the drum and bass-driven “Needle In The Head” hit all the harder. From there, the fractured, razor-sharp digital hardcore and industrial metal grinder barely lets up, guaranteeing a surprised blink once “Neurodiesel” comes to a close.

Atmospherically, the album is a bit of a rollercoaster — switching up the song order could have made the devastation even more pronounced — but M.A.C. OF MAD is still one of the year’s most powerful discoveries. To keep it short: sharing the stage with them would be an incredible experience!
